How on Earth is a room scale choose-your-own-path physical game about making sustainable ceramics. Installed at The Hunt Museum across their 6-month exhibition 'Made of Earth', it featured alongside several interactive works that explore how the utility and beauty of working clay has shaped civilisations.

The game follows the process of manufacturing a ceramic object - from collecting raw materials to decorative touches. Players dice roll their way through clay mixing and shaping, delicately navigate the four stages of firing, and add their creative stamp to finish. Sustainable practice is unearthed along the way, including reusing water and excess glazes, reclaiming slip (clay slurry) and recapturing heat generated by kilns.

The Challenge

To design and install a low-maintenance, low-cost game that invites museum visitors of all ages to explore the process of making sustainable ceramics. The game also had to be finished to the level of quality expected of a high profile museum, and given its location in Limerick, Ireland, without the benefit of a preliminary site visit. We achieved this by developing a large-scale, non-digital floor game with interactive elements that could be reconfigured and adapted during the installation process.

How on Earth was enjoyed by hundreds of museum visitors and received many positive reviews. We are especially proud that the game itself is made from sustainable materials including cork tiles and reclaimed wood. In this way, both its form and content express similar intentions and values.
